California's New Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements
On January 1, 2025, California will implement new minimum auto insurance requirements for its motorists. This change was initiated by Senate Bill 1107—also referred to as the Protect California Drivers Act—which was designed to provide additional protection for drivers after an accident. The Golden State has kept the same minimum requirements since 1967, even though the cost of healthcare and auto repairs have continued to increase. In fact, before this change, California was home to some of the lowest minimum car insurance requirements despite having more licensed drivers than any other state.
Required Car Insurance in California
California's new insurance law will go into effect on January 1, 2025, and will require drivers to carry auto insurance with the minimum limits of 30/60/15, or:
- $30,000 for bodily injury or death per person
- $60,000 for bodily injury or death per accident
- $15,000 for property damage per accident
These new limits will remain in effect until 2035, when they will increase to 50/100/25.
